FAQs

What accessories do I need for my oboe or English horn?

Essential oboe accessories include reeds, a reed case, a swab, cork grease, and a sturdy case. Many players also keep a small reed knife or plaque if they adjust their own reeds.

How often should I replace oboe reeds?

Oboe reeds have a relatively short lifespan compared to single-reed instruments. Depending on playing time and care, reeds may last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Most serious players rotate multiple reeds.

Why is a reed case important?

A reed case protects delicate reed tips from damage and allows airflow so moisture can dry evenly, extending reed life.

Do oboes need cork grease?

Yes. Applying a small amount of cork grease to tenon corks helps prevent tearing and ensures smooth assembly. Only a thin layer is needed.

How do I clean my oboe?

After each use, carefully swab the bore with a properly sized swab to remove moisture. Avoid forcing the swab if it gets stuck.

Do I need to oil my wood oboe or English horn?

Yes, wooden oboes—typically made from grenadilla—benefit from occasional bore oiling to help maintain moisture balance and reduce the risk of drying and cracking. Light bore oil applied sparingly to the inside of the upper and lower joints (never on pads or tone holes) can help condition the wood, especially in dry climates or during seasonal changes. Most players oil their instrument one to three times per year, depending on humidity and how often the instrument is played. However, over-oiling can cause damage, so it’s best done conservatively or by a qualified technician during regular maintenance.
